When it comes to ObamaCare, Pelosi said that we had to pass it to find out what is in it.
One thing that was in it is that employers provide free birth control to their female employees.
The Catholic Church is upset because they are against birth control.
But that is missing the larger issue. The issue is that the government is mandating that employers give their employees birth control. But there is nothing in the constitution that gives them that authority.
If you have a job that is good enough to give you insurance, then you can afford birth control, no question.
But now there is a moral hazard. Before, women would have to shop for their own birth control. Now, they won’t anymore, so price will no longer be a consideration.
The big change is that women who are currently buying birth control will no longer do it anymore. They’ll just get it for free from their employers.
Before, they might not have opted for the pill, which is a higher-priced option. They might have used condoms and diaphragms instead.
And now that the government is subsidizing birth control, the price will keep going higher and higher, just like education.
Is there any limit to how many condoms a woman can have? When the government gives something for free, they are inclined to use it.
People are going to think of all kinds of uses for condoms that have nothing to do with contraception. Why buy balloons for your kids, when you could just give them condoms?
All of this behavior is changed because of government. But is has nothing to do with insurance.
Obama wants to get the vote of women by giving them something for free. But there is no free lunch, and there is no free birth control.
But once birth control is free, it will become extremely expensive. Employers will have to pay their female employees less so that they can afford the birth control.
This is also going to backfire and cause employers to discriminate against women. They are going to become more expensive employees.
If we can require insurance companies to provide free birth control, why doesn’t this extend to other industries? Why aren’t car insurance companies required to provide free tires or free maintenance.
Catholic women will also be forced to take a cut in pay so that they can get “free” birth control.
Once people start abusing this system, the government will have to take counter measures.
Manufacturers will also try to pack in other benefits into their contraceptive pills, like improved complexion.
Government has no authority to do this, but they are doing it anyways. Just because the government thinks we should have something, doesn’t mean employers should be forced to do it. We should have a choice.
We need to reform the tax code so that insurance isn’t provided through the employers. That’s why insurance is so expensive right now.
Obama is pursuing agendas that will exacerbate the very problems that he thinks he is trying to solve.
